Day 7 Goods for a Cause: Annie O’s Boutique

In my work as a social worker and a business coach I support leaders to run organizations that make a difference in the world.   In this season of giving, you can support one of the featured organizations in its  effort to do good works.

Each organization has fair-trade certification or has otherwise established that it pays its artisans a living wage.  Its products meets Western standards of taste and quality.  Many of the organizations were founded by women.

Annie O. Boutique works directly with a women’s cooperative made up of about 80 women.  It is run by three Peruvian sisters.  Annie Oakley Waterman, the Boutique’s founder, says, “I traveled down to Peru about three years ago, where I made the connection. I was drawn to their work because it is women run and supports women who are often victims of domestic violence. These women are living in impoverished conditions, and I saw such a chance to help, seeing they produce vibrant and irresistible embroidered textiles. Traditionally, they have been known to embroidered table mats and belts, but I worked with them on colors and various designs to create more contemporary products.”

These embroidered belts and bags and hand knit shawls will be a special gift this holiday season.
