Peter M. Senge was named a “Strategist of the Century” by the Journal of Business Strategy because of his groundbreaking vision of the learning organization, where a group of people continually improve and enhance their own capabilities in order to mold the larger group into what they desire to create. This book was named by the Harvard Business Review as one of the seminal management books of the past 75 years for the significant impact on the way we conduct business today, and is backed up by years of research by Senge at MIT on how firms and organizations develop adaptive capabilities. Senge argues that it is simply not enough for organizations to go through ‘adaptive learning’ – learning as they go. Instead, there needs to be a systemic thinking that will allow for ‘generative learning’ – learning that will enhance our capacity to create. Senge presents 5 disciplines(approaches) that will develop three core learning capabilities: fostering aspiration, developing reflective conversation, and understanding complexity. It offers advice on building a company that not only has a competitive advantage through its learning, but also creates an empowering work environment that all workers benefit from.
