Author Niel Fiore presents ‘The Now Habit’, which counters the general consensus that people procrastinate because they are lazy and unmotivated. Instead, the author argues that procrastination is a “neurotic form of self-defensive behavior”, a desire to protect one’s self-worth in the face of fear of failure, success, or being imperfect. In order to understand why we procrastinate, the author claims that we must first know how we procrastinate, and then replace these self-defeating patterns with what Fiore calls the patterns of a ‘producer’. This is a far more effective approach than the traditional methods which called for attacking our supposed natural laziness by increasing the amount of guilt, eventually feeling so bad that you cant help but ‘overcome’ the procrastination. Fiore instead argues that humans are naturally productive, and overwork and a lack of free time is oftentimes what leads to people putting off work in the first place.  And through this positive talk, we can see an increase in our overall productivity and excitement. For anyone that is “tired of living in the cycle of guilt”, this book provides a comprehensive guide that examines both the roots of procrastination and effective, varied techniques that help change the way you work, live, and enjoy your free time. By following these lessons, the reader can unlock the inner ‘producer’ that Fiore claims exists within all of us, and in the process bring more joy and satisfaction to their everyday lives.
